Digipak Research

As the A2 course has required that I have to produce a digipak for my own music video project, therefore I decided to make this task in order to understand the basic the concept and measurements of digipaks and make sure that I will produce my digipak in a proper way.

After the portable CD player be invented, the era of vinyl records has been passed(Not for some nostalgic person like me), as the disc format of music is getting common in the 80s, most of musicians chosen to release their albums in a new way which is a digipak that contains usually lyrics and one or two CD discs.

So what exactly is a digipak? Basically a digipak is a kind of patented package of CD, DVD or BD, and it's actually a registered trademark of AGI Digipak, a digipak is typically consists of a gatefold paperboard and a card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays to hold disc attached to the inside.
In another hand, digipak-style packaging is more commonly used for single releases or limited editions for the albums. Due to the reason that comparing with Jewel cases (Another format of disc case), digipak is cheaper therefore the record labels would able to produce more digipaks with smaller amount of budget, and also digipak is much more environment friendly than jewel cases. In addition, digipak have been criticized as being prone to deformation and illegible spines.

There are few different types of digipaks:

Overall, with this task's information, I have gained more knowledges and understandings about digipak, and eventually they will be useful for my production of my own digipak.
