Therefore what is the purpose of making a music video? in my opinion, we can break it down into these aspects:
, Expand the meaningful messages within the music/songs, a musician's work are usually contains certain messages and narratives, in order to help the audiences to visualise the messages and narratives within the music/songs, create a music video can always do that.
, It is also provide a great opportunity for the musician to showcase their abilities apart from singing, such as choreography, acting(Like what lady gaga did in several music videos of her), playing instruments, etc.
, In order to create more profit, the following merchandises of the music video, such as exclusive albums, posters, downloading, and even the commercials within the music video(Using the specific product from a specific company) could brought more profits as well.
, An excellent music video could bring more positive public critiques and reputations, and even change the audience's opinion of the music itself, such as Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal, it's incredibly famous and been well-remembered, but what people really remembered is the famous dance moves that michael did in the music video, not the music itself.
, Create an alter ego of the singer him/herself, and develop it as an art concept. Like David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and Lady Gaga's Jo Caderone, and even produce an album under their names(The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and Spiders from Mars).
, In order to make the artist him/herself more famous, essentially the audiences couldn't really have an complete impression of the singer through the music/songs, but they can do it through the music video, also a effective music video can create the stereotype of the singer to the audiences, this is especially important for those singers who's not selling their music but selling their personal images to the audience (Such as Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift etc.)
,Simply just trying to sell more albums, a well-known music video can definitely attract and encourage the audience to purchase the music/album itself.
